BFUng’s main conductor is Kjell Seim, Norway’s most important inspirator for young orchestra musicians.
Kjell Seim has studied at the Norwegian Music School where he graduated in 1986. He has studied with the conductors Arvid Fladmoe, Karsten Andersen, Aldo Ceccato and Jorma Panula. Seim has conducted all the Norwegian professional symphony orchestras and has been associated with the opera in Kristiansund since 1986, and since 1989 as musical boss.
Seim has been an artistic director of several orchestras; the Norwegian-Norwegian chamber orchestra (1990-1993), Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (1991-1992) and Jönköping Symphony Orchestra (1995-1998). He has also hosted a number of orchestras and opera houses in the Nordic countries as well as Germany, Russia, China, South Africa and Ukraine. In 1987 he won 1st prize at the Nordic conductor competition with the Radio Symphonics in Stockholm in 1987.
Kjell Seim has devoted a lot of time to working with youth ever since 1973. In 1997 he founded Young Symphony in Bergen, and in 2008 the West Region Youth Symphony Orchestra. His significance for the artistic development of BFUng since 2015, former Young Symphony, can hardly be exaggerated.
